Harrison Adult and Family Education is dedicated to providing quality education and positive learning experiences in a supportive environment that empowers learners of all ages to reach their potential and enrich their lives.

Our Purpose

The Harrison Adult & Family Education Program is a reflection of the district's commitment to serve the community. Instruction is provided for adults - ages 16 and older - seeking English Language Development, Adult Basic Education or preparation to pass tests that will result in earning a GED. Adult students who reside in Harrison School District Two can access programing for their children, infancy through fifth grade.  Enrolled children attend pre-school or academic enrichment classes while their parents attend adult education classes.  Parents participate in learning activities with their children during Parent and Child Time (PACT).

Harrison's commitment to family literacy is based on research that shows there is a positive link between parent education level and their child's success in school.

English Language Development (ELD): Adult students who desire to learn English can register to be enrolled in English Language Development classes.  Five levels of English instruction are offered.  Students are placed in a class that best meets their needs based on a screening test completed during registration.

Space in ELD classes is limited.  Attendance is important to learner success.  Students who can attend regularly are given priority during enrollment if registration exceeds availability. Students who are not able to attend regularly may be dropped to make room for others on a waiting list.

Adult Basic Education (ABE): Adult students who desire to improve basic academic skills can register to be enrolled in classes that focus on academic instruction.  Beginning and intermediate levels of instruction are offered.  Basic education classes develop reading, writing, and math skills.  These classes prepare adult students to succeed in a course that supports them to pass tests resulting in a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).  Students are placed in an ABE class that best meets their needs based on a screening test completed during registration.

GED Preparation (GED): Adult students who desire to prepare to pass tests that will result in a GED can register to be enrolled in classes that provide instruction for students preparing to take the tests.  There are five GED sub-tests: Language Arts-Reading, Language Arts-Writing, Social Studies, Science, and Math.  Students are placed in a GED preparation class that best meets their needs based on a screening test completed during registration.

Students may earn high school credit by passing some GED sub-tests and then return to a regular high school program to earn a standard diploma.  For information about this option students should work with a counselor at their high school of residence or attendance.

Students who are not yet 21 years of age are encouraged to register each week on specific days and times devoted to registration.  The process takes several hours and will be accomplished with groups of students when possible.  However, please do not hesitate to contact us if those times do not work for you.  We will register students at other times by appointment.  Call (719) 579-2580 for more information.

Family Programming: The goal of Family Programming is to provide children with a solid foundation for school readiness and to support school success for students who attend school. Early Childhood Education is available for children whose parents are enrolled in English classes, Adult Basic Education, and GED preparation or one of the district's high schools.  Family Literacy Programing follows the four-component model of the National Center for Family Literacy.
